Salt Export from Pakistan: Market Overview

Grain length, aroma, ageing and packing: what separates export-grade Basmati.

Salt Export from Pakistan: Market Overview

Pakistan holds one of the largest salt reserves in the world, and its export sector runs from bulk industrial rock salt to pink salt lamps sold in gift shops thousands of miles from the mine. For buyers and industry watchers, this overview sets out what the export market looks like.

The Scale of Pakistan’s Salt Resources

Pakistan is regarded as one of the largest salt-producing countries in Asia, with reserves concentrated mainly in the Salt Range of Punjab. According to figures compiled by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), reserves controlled by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation alone exceed 36 million metric tons. These include pink rock salt from the Salt Range and grey salt from the Kohat Saline Series, and overall estimated national rock salt reserves are considerably higher.

Growth in Pink Salt Exports

Pink salt has become a notable growth story within Pakistan’s wider salt exports. Shipments rose from roughly $35 million to $36 million in value between recent fiscal years, while export volume climbed from around 128,000 tonnes to more than 148,000 tonnes over the same period.

That is steady rather than explosive growth, but it points to a consistent upward trend as international demand for the product builds.

Product Mix: From Raw Rock Salt to Finished Goods

Pakistan’s salt exports are not limited to raw rock salt. The export basket includes iodised table salt, industrial and de-icing salt, and sea salt from the Arabian Sea coast. Increasingly it also includes value-added products such as salt lamps, spa and bath products, and gourmet edible salt in retail packaging.

The shift matters commercially, because finished goods generally command significantly higher prices per ton than raw rock salt shipped in bulk.

Key Export Markets

Pakistani salt reaches a fairly broad set of markets, including the United States, the European Union, the Middle East, China, Malaysia and other parts of Asia and beyond. Demand differs by product type. Bulk industrial and food-grade salt tends to go to markets with established food manufacturing or chemical processing sectors, while pink salt lamps and spa products are concentrated in gift, wellness and specialty retail channels across North America and Europe.

Protecting the Product’s Identity

As international demand for pink salt has grown, so has Pakistan’s effort to formally protect its link with the product. Khewra Pink Rock Salt was registered as a Geographical Indication in 2022, part of a wider push to strengthen origin-based branding. It gives Pakistani exporters clearer legal standing to protect the name internationally, in the same way that other origin-specific commodities are protected.
