Product Details

Black Banded Onyx from Pakistan

Black Banded Onyx is a layered calcite mineral formed by the slow, rhythmic deposition of mineral-rich water in underground cavities over geological time. Each band represents a separate phase of mineral precipitation, with alternating layers of black (carbon and manganese-rich calcite) and white to cream (pure calcite) building up to create the stone’s signature striped appearance. The banding direction, thickness, and contrast vary naturally across the block, making each slab a unique natural pattern. Pakistan’s onyx deposits are world-renowned for producing banded varieties with exceptional clarity, contrast, and translucency.

Available Forms

  • Raw Blocks: quarry-extracted, for processing at the importer’s facility

  • Slabs: cut to standard or custom dimensions, 15-20 mm for backlighting, 20-30 mm for standard use

  • Tiles: 30x30, 60x60, 120x60 cm and custom formats

  • Backlit panels: slabs cut to 10-15 mm for maximum light transmission, with mesh backing

  • Custom shapes: circular, oval, curved, and bookmatched pairs

Surface Finishes

Polished, Honed, Brushed. Polished finish intensifies the black-and-white contrast and maximizes translucency.

Industrial Uses

  • Backlit feature walls: Black Banded Onyx panels over LED light boxes create a dramatic glowing effect where the white bands transmit light and the black bands remain opaque, producing a striking light-and-shadow pattern. This is one of the most visually impactful backlit stone applications available

  • Luxury feature walls (non-backlit): Large-format polished slabs as statement walls in hotel lobbies, penthouse interiors, corporate boardrooms, and high-end retail spaces

  • Bar and reception counters: Backlit or standard-lit Black Banded Onyx countertops and fascia panels for five-star hotels, premium bars, and corporate reception desks

  • Bathroom and spa interiors: Full-height wall cladding, shower enclosures, vanity surfaces, and bathtub surrounds in luxury bathrooms. The black and white banding complements both modern monochrome and classic interior schemes

  • Elevator and lift interiors: Backlit or polished panels for elevator cabs in luxury towers and hotels

  • Flooring: Polished tiles in low-traffic luxury areas such as master suites, private lounges, and VIP rooms

  • Furniture and decorative objects: Tabletops, console surfaces, lamp bases, bowls, bookends, and decorative accessories. Black Banded Onyx is particularly popular for luxury home accessories

  • Architectural accents: Column cladding, fireplace surrounds, staircase handrail panels, and window sill capping

Quality Assurance

Each shipment can be supplied with a material inspection report. Banding intensity and translucency grading are available. Third-party pre-shipment inspection (SGS or equivalent) can be arranged on request. All slabs are resin-treated and mesh-backed for structural reinforcement. Slab selection, bookmatching, and banding direction matching services are available.

Why Source From Pakistan?

Pakistan is one of the world’s premier sources of banded onyx, with quarries in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa producing blocks with vivid black-and-white contrast and excellent translucency. The country has decades of experience quarrying, processing, and exporting onyx to luxury stone markets across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and North America. Pakistani Black Banded Onyx offers dramatic visual impact comparable to the finest banded onyx from Mexico and Argentina at a more competitive FOB price. Modern processing facilities produce resin-treated, mesh-backed slabs ready for backlighting and architectural installation. DaaTrade manages sourcing, banding grading, slab selection, quality verification, samples and export through one desk.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: When backlit, the white and cream bands transmit light and glow warmly, while the black bands remain opaque, creating a dramatic striped light-and-shadow effect. Slabs are cut to 10-15 mm thickness for maximum light transmission and mounted over LED light panels with a small air gap. We supply backlit-ready panels that are resin-treated and mesh-backed. Warm white LEDs are recommended for the most natural and dramatic effect. The result is a visually striking installation unlike any other wall or counter finish.

A: Yes. Banding direction (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) depends on how the slab is cut from the block. We offer banding direction selection so your slabs match your design intent. We also grade banding intensity: “bold band” slabs have thick, well-defined black and white stripes, while “fine band” slabs have thinner, more numerous alternating layers. Bookmatched pairs with mirrored banding are available for feature wall installations. Slab photos are shared for approval before final processing.

A: Onyx is softer and more delicate than marble or granite (compressive strength ≥ 55 MPa). All our slabs are resin-treated to fill micro-fissures and mesh-backed for structural reinforcement. With proper installation on a flat, well-prepared substrate using appropriate adhesive, onyx performs well in wall cladding, backlighting, countertops, and low-traffic flooring. It is not recommended for high-traffic commercial floors or outdoor paving. Handle with care during transport and installation.
