Yellow & Green Soapstone from Pakistan

Soapstone is a soft, talc-rich metamorphic mineral valued for its whiteness, softness, chemical inertness, heat resistance, and low electrical conductivity. Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has large soapstone deposits that naturally occur in two distinct color varieties.

Yellow Soapstone

Yellow Soapstone has a warm golden to pale yellow coloration caused by trace iron oxide content in the talc matrix. It is softer and slightly more friable than the green variety. Yellow Soapstone is preferred in applications where color is not critical, such as general-purpose fillers, agricultural carriers, and animal feed additives. It is also specified for certain ceramic bodies where a warmer fired color is desired.

Green Soapstone

Green Soapstone has a grey-green to olive coloration from higher magnesium and chlorite mineral content. It is generally denser and slightly harder than the yellow variety. Green Soapstone is preferred for applications requiring higher purity, better whiteness after calcination, and lower iron content, such as premium ceramic bodies, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and high-grade paint fillers.

Industrial Uses

• Ceramics and tiles: Soapstone powder is a key ingredient in ceramic bodies, providing flux, reducing firing temperature, improving surface smoothness, and enhancing thermal shock resistance. Green soapstone is preferred for white-firing bodies, yellow for general-purpose ceramics

• Paints and coatings: Micronized soapstone is used as an extender pigment and functional filler in paints, primers, and industrial coatings. It improves film smoothness, weather resistance, and reduces paint settling

• Plastics and polymers: Talc from soapstone is added to polypropylene, polyethylene, and other plastics to improve stiffness, dimensional stability, heat resistance, and surface finish

• Rubber: Soapstone powder is used as a filler and processing aid in rubber compounding, improving extrusion, reducing tack, and lowering compound cost

• Paper and pulp: Talc filler improves paper smoothness, opacity, printability, and ink absorption

• Cosmetics and personal care: High-purity green soapstone is the raw material for cosmetic-grade talc used in talcum powder, face powder, eye shadow, and other personal care products

• Pharmaceuticals: USP/BP-grade talc from green soapstone is used as a tableting excipient, glidant, and dusting powder

• Agriculture: Soapstone powder is used as a carrier for pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizer coatings

• Welding electrodes: Soapstone is used as a flux and coating ingredient in welding rod formulations

Quality Assurance

Each lot can be supplied with a Certificate of Analysis reporting talc content, SiO₂, MgO, Fe₂O₃, CaO, Al₂O₃, LOI, whiteness, mesh size distribution, and moisture. Third-party inspection (SGS or equivalent) can be arranged on request.
